Tax Configuration

Configure tax rates for your dispensary. Tax settings are found in Configuration > Settings, under the Tax tab.

Tax Rates

GreenPOS supports three tax rate fields:

Tax FieldDescription
Medical Marijuana Tax RateThe MMJ-specific tax rate (%)
State Sales Tax RateYour state's sales tax rate (%)
Local Sales Tax RateCity or county sales tax rate (%)

All three rates are entered as percentages and applied at checkout. The receipt shows a breakdown of each tax type.

Price Entry Mode

Choose how product prices are entered in your store:

ModeDescription
Pre-TaxPrices are entered without tax. Taxes are calculated and added at checkout.
Post-TaxPrices already include all taxes. The system back-calculates the tax portion at checkout.

A live calculation example on the settings page shows exactly how taxes will break down based on your current rates and selected mode.

How Taxes Work at Checkout

When a sale is completed, the receipt shows:

  • Subtotal — Sum of all item prices
  • MMJ Tax — Medical marijuana tax amount
  • State Tax — State sales tax amount
  • Local Tax — Local sales tax amount
  • Total — Final amount the customer pays

Tax-Exempt Customers

Customers can be marked as Tax Exempt on their customer profile. When a tax-exempt customer is attached to a sale, taxes are not applied.

To set a customer as tax-exempt:

  1. Go to Customers and open the customer's profile.
  2. Check the Tax Exempt checkbox.
  3. Save.

Tax Reports

View tax collection data in Reports & Analytics > Tax Breakdown. The report shows:

  • Total taxes collected by type (MMJ, state, local)
  • Tax breakdown by date range
  • Export to CSV for accounting and tax filing

Tips

  • Verify with your accountant — Tax rates and rules vary by jurisdiction. Confirm your configuration with a CPA familiar with cannabis regulations.
  • Update promptly — When tax rates change, update your settings immediately to avoid over- or under-collecting.
  • Test after changes — Process a test transaction after changing tax settings to verify calculations are correct.
